Keeping track of containers in terminals

The Camco image recognition solutions provide accurate container data based on AI-enabled cameras at specific and fixed container transfer touchpoints like fi terminal gates.

An additional way of registering valuable container data is made possible by using Camco Real Time Location Systems or RTLS technology. RTLS offers a dynamic container registration solution that keeps track of container movements in real time.

Not the container as such is tracked but the equipment moving the container: straddle & shuttle carriers, terminal trucks, reach stackers and empty handlers.

Combining the static with the dynamic container data capture systems offers a unique opportunity to track and trace containers everywhere and in real time, offering essential data for operations planning.

Real-time tracking of container handling equipment

The Camco range of RTLS applications includes

  • Straddle carrier alignment under STS-cranes
  • Anti-collision system for straddle carriers
  • Yard inventory by tracking container handling equipment
  • Job-stepping for CHE
  • Alignment of external, or terminal trucks under RMG and RTG cranes
  • Increasing safety by detection of quay-workers under STS-crane

All Camco RTLS solutions include proprietary hardware and software.

The hardware set-up comprises a proprietary RTLS-MLT controller, an RTLS-GNSS/radio receiver, MLT-UWB antennas, and RFID readers.

The software suite includes CHE-embedded software as well as applications for the central control room.

Precision location with sensor fusion

The Camco RTLS expertise relies on a combination of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and UWB (Ultra-Wide Band), depending on the complexity of the application.

All solutions are based on sensor fusion, the meaning position is calculated using several location sources such as GNSS and UWB as separate but complementary technologies.

Aligning straddle carriers under STS-cranes

With precision detection up to 5 cm, MLT-UWB is highly effective for straddle carrier alignment during vessel handling.

When a straddle carrier drops a container in its dedicated lane under the STS crane, the container must be dropped off exactly according to the vessel bay being serviced.

With precise drop-off, the crane can pick up and drop the container in one move without needing a corrective STS-crane repositioning.

Preventing STS crane repositioning improves STS-crane Key Performance Indicators (KPI) but also vessel turnaround.

With MLT-UWB system precision under a couple of centimeters, it's the best available technology for the alignment of the STS crane in front-reach and back-reach operations.

There are no technical alternatives for back-reach straddle carrier alignment. With more terminals using the back reach, MLT-UWB is the only alternative.

Straddle carrier anti-collision

When hundreds of straddle carriers crisscross from the quay to the stacks at high speed, straddle drivers as well as equipment have to be protected. Despite intensive training and traffic rules accidents can happen.

The Camco anti-collision applications keep track of the straddle carrier fleet, through a network of sensors and antennas.

The anti-collision solution relies on continuous tracking of all straddle carrier positions to prevent collisions and avoid costly production downtime.

When two straddle carriers near entering a pre-set safety perimeter, both straddle carriers are forced to an immediate stand-still to avoid a collision.
